“Back Door Santa” by Clarence Carter, from 1968, is considered by some to be the naughtiest Christmas song, complete with the most suggestive “Ho, ho, ho, ho” ever recorded.
“Santa Baby” by Eartha Kitt, from 1953, is considered by some to be the most sex kittenish Christmas song ever recorded. (It’s been widely covered, too. Stick with the original, kids.)
Tonight, though, a naughty and suggestive and sex kittenish Christmas song you’ve likely never heard. It’s all wrapped up in an elegant, laid-back country arrangement. It’ll sneak up on you. Just wait for that “Holy shit!” moment.
“Who Needs Mistletoe,” Julie Roberts, from Who Needs Mistletoe, 2011. (It’s an EP with this original song and six covers of familiar holiday songs.)
OK, but who’s Julie Roberts?
A South Carolina native, she started her country music career 20 years ago, in the early ’00s. She debuted with a Billboard Hot Country Top 20 hit with “Break Down Here” in 2004.
Her first two albums — “Julie Roberts” and “Men & Mascara” — reached the Billboard Country Top 10 in 2004 and 2006. While recording the latter, Roberts was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
“Who Needs Mistletoe” came out as an independent release when Roberts was between labels.
Two years later, in April 2013, Roberts sang in the blind auditions for NBC’s “The Voice” but didn’t advance.
She’s since released two more albums on small labels — “Good Wine & Bad Decisions” in 2013 and “Ain’t In No Hurry” in 2022. She worked with writer-producer Shooter Jennings on the latter.
